One thing that has really surprised me was how unenthusiastic sweets has been to the whole vegan thing. I don't know quite what I expected, but I was hoping he'd be more into it. He has been vegetarian most of his life, and he was even vegan for a period, I think. I've never gotten the entire story out of him, but I know he was living in a vegan household and his girlfriend was vegan, so maybe vegan by default doesn't really count? It's hard to say, actually. But he's not been the most excited person about this whole change. I'm not really certain what his lack of enthusiasm is about. I know he was worried that I'd stop making chocolate chip cookies, but I reassured him that I could make them just fine, I just wouldn't eat them. I don't know if maybe he actually likes eating meat? But then, whenever I make something good and meaty he would let those leftovers sit in the fridge forever, and he's usually the guy who keeps track of leftovers so they don't go to waste.
He's a forest ecologist, so I thought maybe he'd be behind me on a purely environmental level, but that doesn't seem to be the case either.
I just can't figure him out, I guess.
All I know is that he thought I would go back to the regular diet once the 28-day challenge was up, and when I didn't he was surprised. I don't know if maybe he thinks I'm going to start insisting on canvas shoes and throwing fake blood at people wearing leather belts? Hard to say, really. But this morning when he found the sugar canister next to the coffee maker (where he'd left it but forgotten), he asked me, "What, is sugar not vegan?" Then I pointed out that I had no idea why the sugar was by the coffee maker, maybe he needed to put it away next time because I needed it for my pumpkin cranberry scone recipe. He liked the scones enough, though.
But I'm still happy. Life is still good. I like this change. I have been craving salty fatty like crazy, so I just gave in and ate some fried, salted plaintain chips from whole foods. yummers. They totally hit the spot. I ended up losing a little more weight, but I think I spent most of yesterday trying to put it back on, so I'm not going to report it. Next weigh in on Wednesday of next week, I think.
