During bath tonight, the lentil was playing with his toes. At first he just wanted to count them, but then he became very interested in naming them: "This is the big toe, this is the little toe. No, this is the big toe. This is the.... " (looks for name) "bletzley toe" (makes up a word to name that toe). "This is the big toe, this is the Finn toe, this is the Deirdre toe."
Earlier in the evening, after dinner, the lentil and I were sitting on the couch reading books. He's in love with a book that a patient sent me- Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-Zoo. We loves us some Mercer Mayer. I am always reminded of all the Mercer Mayer books we had when I was a kid- there's a part of me that believes that people really do look like Mercer Mayer drawings- big heads, short legs, lots of hair, round noses. After the book was over, he started playing with an empty paper bag that was on the couch. He stuck his hand in it and made it into a puppet, and then he and the puppet had a little conversation about how the puppet was nakey nakerson and did he want some chicken?
Well, of course the puppet wanted some chicken. So we ran into the kitchen to see if there was still some chicken laying out from dinner, and sure enough, there was. I cut it into puppet-sized pieces and laid it all carefully on the edge of the table so the lentil could reach it. He hopped over, looked down at the chicken, picked the best piece, and hopped away. And I found myself amazed that he could see over the table. He wasn't even standing on tippy toes and he could see everything on the table. I didn't need to line it up at the end for him to swipe at- he was tall enough to reach for it even if it was a few inches back. When did my little boy grow tall enough to see over the table? Wasn't it just last week that he was constantly smacking his forehead against the table?
Wow- they really do grow up before you even know it. It seemed like he was 24 pounds for a whole year, and now he's 28 pounds. I suppose at this rate he'll be 128 pounds and I'll still be amazed he can see over the table.
