The lentil went all day yesterday with no accidents and we feel well on the way to being potty-competent!
Almost immediately upon starting his new school, the lentil's teachers were pressuring us to potty train him. My feeling at the time was that he just wasn't ready. He didn't know when he needed to pee, he wasn't at all bothered by being wet and mucky, and diapers were just so easy. We were busy people, we'd just gone through a major change, and the lentil wasn't interested in the potty in the slightest. He's peed on the potty off and on for months, but never intentionally. Usually he would pee just because he'd been sitting there awhile and wasn't paying attention.
The first week of potty training was utter hell. The lentil had no clue what his body's signals were, he could care less about wetting his pants, and wasn't bothered by wearing around a stinky, poop-filled pair of underwear for an hour. It was so frustrating to sit there with him on the potty for an hour or even two hours without any product, only to have him pee on the floor just minutes after the potty had been set aside. Sweets and I were at our wits end. We sent him back to daycare on Monday after the messiest weekend on record, vowing to get them back for this torture. I gave the teachers an earfull when I talked to them on Monday afternoon, and they just reassured me and gave me new strategies to try. They seemed to think it was working.
Sure enough, by Thursday the lentil was able to go on the potty 4 out of 5 times, and he hadn't had a poop accident all week. Yesterday he had no accidents, and hopefully today he'll do this again. We've gone from being so irritated about the whole thing to being absolutely thankful that we sweated it out and made it through to the other end.
So, the boy is almost potty trained. I'm glad my dad is paying the electric bill to compensate for all the laundry we've been doing, but that is nothing compared to the price of diapers. Yay!
